Keto Diet & MCT

Keto Diet & MCT

Today I want to RAVE about my new “diet”. My whole life I have struggled with my weight to a degree. I have suffered from severe body dysmorphic disorder and even eating disorders. Before I got married I did the HCG diet and dropped 45 pounds and had successfully kept it off for years. In the past year and a half I have gained more weight than I would like to admit due to steroid injections for my extreme allergies and asthma. I also got too comfortable in a relationship that didn’t promote good eating or living styles which didn’t help. I have about 20 pounds I want to lose so I started doing some research and talking to my fabulous friends. One, a super badass crossfit girl and my best friend had started doing the Keto Diet and using MCT oil. I really dragged my feet on jumping on board because as a person who has been consuming only 1200 calories a day and very low fat I thought there was NO WAY this diet could work. Well starving myself wasn’t either. I decided to let go of the fear of food and fat and try Keto. The first week I lost two pounds and felt amazing. I thought I just felt so awesome because for the first time in years I was eating bacon (real bacon guys…not turkey), and cheese!! I will admit, it’s been a struggle. Not the cutting of carbs, but the mental battle I still have that rages from eating disorders. I find myself really having to force myself to eat when I feel hungry and not count calories. I definitely slacked this weekend and ate pizza twice, but that is balance 😉 right?

I just got my order of MCT oil and I am going to start putting that in my coffee. Friends are having amazing results with it….I am talking inches lost! So what is Keto and MCT?

A keto diet is well known for being a low carb diet, where the body produces ketones in the liver to be used as energy. It’s referred to as many different names – ketogenic diet, low carb diet, low carb high fat (LCHF), etc. When you eat something high in carbs, your body will produce glucose and insulin.

There are macro calculators on the internet you can use to figure out what your macros should be personally. Mine is 65% fat, 30% protein, 5% carbs. Luckily the internet is also full of recipes and ideas for substitutions. Cauliflower rice and cauliflower mash has been a life saver!

“MCTs” are medium-chain triglycerides, a form of saturated fatty acid that has numerous health benefits, ranging from improved cognitive function to better weight management. Coconut oil is one great source of MCTs — roughly 62–65 percent of the fatty acids in coconut oil are MCTs — but recently more concentrated “MCT oils” have also been growing in popularity.

MCT essentially helps you get your ketones on faster. It helps burn fat like our bodies burn carbs for energy and surges in our metabolism. You can get it on Amazon or health stores.

So wish me luck on this journey I am embarking on to a better and healthier me! 🙂
